According to Naoki Yoshida, it has become the most profitable game in the Final Fantasy license.
“Final Fantasy 14” director Yoshida Naoki revealed that this popular MMO has surpassed the 24 million player mark, becoming the most profitable game in the Final Fantasy series.
With the upcoming release of the next expansion package Endwalker, this number seems to continue to rise.
The development of Final Fantasy 14 from the 2010s
At the press conference of the Endwalker preview event, Yoshida showed the player’s steady development in the game life cycle.
After the disastrous release in 2010, Square Enix held an apocalyptic event in the game. It’s to mark the end of its initial version and completely remade Final Fantasy 14.
This gave birth to A Realm Reborn, followed by three expansion packs – Heavensward, Stormblood and Shadowbringers – which helped to increase the popularity of the game every two years.
Starting from 4 million when A Realm Reborn was released in 2015, the restarted game changed its game after experiencing an extremely difficult initial stage.
By the time the third expansion Stormblood came out in 2017, it had reached 10 million.
In the next four years, this number has doubled.
And now, with the release of Endwalker imminent, Final Fantasy 14 has reached its latest milestone: 24 million players.

The popularity of Final Fantasy 14 at this time
Yoshida says it may be a bit shameful to say, but as far as their business is concerned, they have achieved great success. Looking to the future, they will spare no effort to invest to ensure that this game continues to be a game that our players can enjoy
At this point, the team should be proud because they are all part of bringing the game back from the edge. And they even make it one of the premier MMOs on the market.
Considering the success of Shadowbringers, Endwalker has high hopes.
Judging from our preview, the latest expansion seems to meet or exceed those lofty hopes. Since the game is released on PS5, it can reach more people.
However, this year’s player base has grown due to other factors. They include the COVID-19 pandemic, which has led to multiple blockades around the world and promoted overall video game consumption, as well as the expansion of the free experience to include Heavensward.
After introducing an unpopular patch in World of Warcraft, well-known MMO streamers like Asmongold also tried the game.
The latter aroused the sudden interest of many people, thereby prolonging the waiting time and overloading the Final Fantasy server.
The game set a record for concurrent players on Steam in July.
Square Enix responded to this, promising to add more servers and implement AFK timers to kick out inactive players, among other changes.
Due to the influx of players, digital copies of A Realm Reborn have even been sold out.
Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker will be released on PC, PS4 and PS5 on November 23.
