So far, PlayStation 5 has sold more than 13 million units. But it is slightly lower than PlayStation 4’s first-year sales, which may be due to a shortage of consoles.
PlayStation 5’s first sales year misses Sony’s sales target
Sony has confirmed that it has sold a total of 13.4 million PlayStation 5 consoles. But this is still lower than PS4’s first year sales.
Of course, since 2020, Sony has experienced an uphill battle due to the pandemic, game delays, and continued shortage of consoles.
So this number is considerable, but it does reflect the company’s struggles.
PlayStation 5 is still expected to perform strongly in 2021, but it is not without some obstacles to overcome.
The PS5 stock shortage may continue until 2022
The PlayStation 5 shortage is expected to continue until 2022. Some speculate that it might even last until 2023, but this remains to be seen.
As of now, the shortage may not cause much harm to Sony.
So far, all remaining Sony first-party games in 2021 have been postponed to 2022.
So this is expected to give platform owners time to produce more consoles and start operations in the new year.
2023 and beyond also seem to be quite big, so no matter how long it takes, buying a PlayStation 5 will not be a bad time.
Nevertheless, the shortage does seem to hinder Sony’s sales.
Sony reported that it sold 3.3 million PlayStation 5 units in the second fiscal quarter ending September 30, 2021.
This brings the total sales of game consoles to 13.4 million units, which is only 500,000 less than the PlayStation 4’s sales over the same period in its life cycle (via Engadget).
Nevertheless, PlayStation 5 sales are better than PlayStation 4 in certain regions, which means that this shortcoming has been compensated in some ways.
PlayStation 5’s sales have surpassed that of Switch
In view of the high demand for PlayStation 5, its sales have surpassed that of Switch.
It is not difficult to imagine that if the stand-alone is easier to obtain, PlayStation 5 may surpass PlayStation 4.
Although only a few games are only available on PlayStation 5, the console’s advanced technology and promising future library still make it a hot commodity.
As more and more game consoles are slowly introduced and enter the hands of gamers, the struggle to acquire game consoles is expected to become easier. Sony may not be able to compare with its success on PlayStation 4.
But considering this situation, PlayStation 5 sales figures still represent an impressive feat.
